Hi Alyssa, There are tons of younger people who go to IMATS. I have never been to the one in NY but I have been going to the one in LA for a couple of years now. Don't worry about other peoples artistry skills. This is a place where all makeup lovers and artist can get together and shop! Again I have never been to the NY one, but if you plan on going to a lot of big name brand booths, there will probably be long lines so you could be there all day.
My advice is to print out an exhibitor map and mark down all the booths you want to go to and the things you want to buy, it always helps!
have fun!
