I went ahead and put this in skincare but I'm not sure if it's the correct category. I know that before and after you shave down there you're supposed to exfoliate but I'm so confused as to what to exfoliate with. It just seems really harsh and I would look this up on google but it's given me so much bad information and advice, especially regarding that area.

I don't exfoliate down there before or after shaving and I've had no problems. I get problems whenever I use any fragrances, douches or anything like that because it messes up the natural ph balance.

I personally do it after do get rid of all the stray hairs and any dry skin. I use an apple and sandlewood scrub by Hempz which is super gentle but you could also use an exfoliating loofa.

It's better to do it before.. After might cause some irritation especially if you have sensitive skin... And all it does is help you to get a closer and cleaner shave that's all it does - but I use a sugar scrub - but so as not disturb your pH never put anything (exfoliant or otherwise) inside... If kept on the outside you'll be fine n won't mess up anything

I don't exfoliate it either. I feel like that's a very sensitive area. I always make sure to use a gentle wash.

I exfoliate before with brown sugar and melted coconut oil, then shave with a saving lotion, not foam. Then wash up after to remove any residues. Then afterwards I apply some baby powder :) *only to the front, never between the legs, just for clarification*

I agree if you do it beforehand it'll help you get a closer shave but I wouldn't scrub after. I use my summers eve wash after so as not to irritate freshly shaved skin with fragrance etc.and to keep my ph in check.

Powder is a great idea Raylene! I use vagisil powder or chafing gel to prevent chafing too.:)

^Gloria - not really... And especially not down there... The best thing to do after shaving is moisturize - preferably fragrance free but think about it... You just caused a bunch of trauma to your skin by shaving it and probably have some ripped skin from it too - so the best way to avoid razor bumps is to moisturize afterwards... And that includes armpits too - you should moisturize them as well

I exfoliate with sugar and oil then shave using coconut oil as a shaving cream and then after put a bit of coconut oil on as a moisturiser

I never exfoliate and I've never had any problems. I moisturize afterwards to minimize irritation. I don't believe you absolutely need to exfoliate down there. I personally think that's too sensitive an area to exfoliate. That's just my opinion. Do what keeps you comfortable down there :)

Brittany and Angela I learned about the baby powder from a friend who took a waxing course. Because of the trauma waxing and shaving can cause to the first layer of skin, you should avoid deodorant (for the first twelve hours, and harsh lotions) the baby powder acts as a barrier between your skin and panties, and on armpits helps soak up sweat while being a tad smell good. :) so that's why I do it. I moisturize a couple hours afterwards. But always baby powder right after :) and I shave at night so the deodorant isn't that much a problem by the time I'm up and ready I can use deodorant again haha.

You should do it before and you can make your own scrub to exfoliate...I like to use a brown sugar and olive oil mixture. after 24hrs of shaving exfoliate again.

Gloria yes!! if you use a fragrance free deodorant after shaving it prevents bumps and ingrowns (stripper trick)

I know baby powder is great too sometimes I wax and the lady that does it for me always put a cooling aloe vera gel to reduce redness and sometimes uses baby powder.

Yaya, do you know why deodorant does that? I've heard of that and I guess it makes sense as my under arms have never had ingrowns or bumps, but I don't understand why it works lol.

Exfoliate before shaving. When you shave first go in the direction of the hair and then against the directions of the hair growth. Maybe exfoliate the next day to catch any hairs you missed but immediately afterwards seems harsh.
