French nail tips question!!

So this might be a silly question but my nails have never been long enough to pull off the look and now I want to try it. haha.
Anyways, do you use clear polish or a nude color for the rest of the nail that's not the tip? My thumb had the whole half circle look and I kinda want to cover that up. Plus I want to do an ombre/French tip look. What would be the best thing to use?

I use a very sheer pink for mine. One by sally Hansen that I can't remember the name of but I'll look at it when I get home.

I've had an ombré French tip and in my opinion a pink looks so much better. I've had both nude and a ballet pink and it just stands out more.
