It's illegal. People still do it though. There was a thread about this awhile back and it cause so much drama, lol. My opinion is if the store doesn't care and the products aren't used, go for it. I've been dumpster diving since I was 7 but never at any beauty supplys or anything. Honestly, it's not because I'm broke, it's not because I'm nasty, it's because it's fun, people have different mindsets on what's fun for them and that's mine. Simple bonding time between me and whomever is with me. I get coupons, anything sitting on the side that's worth fixing up, etc, and I make me some monnnnneyyyy. I don't actually dive into dirty diapers and beer cans, I stand on the outside and pick through and I carry gloves with me. In case anyone has any comment about how I do it.

I personally wouldn't. No h8 to those who do though, but to me I don't think makeup is worth all of that haha.

I heard of this too, and man do I remember all the drama on the previous thread lol. I used to watch YouTube videos of people dumpster diving and wishing I had all that! But at the same time, I don't know where it's been and what has been done to it. I remember watching so many videos that I had dreams of myself dumpster diving and I was extremely happy, it was so disappointing waking up to no makeup lol. Kind of reminds me of thrift shopping, which I love. But I'm a little wary of putting things on my face if I don't know where it came from.

I work in the mall , at Estée Lauder and we throw it away in the back and burn it. I would keep it alllll if I could tho no doubt. A lot of things can be sanitized

Lol if you do it, don't grab anything that's open, or if you're doing it fast and you get home and realized you grab a few open things just throw it away.
Also a lot of people destroy the products, furniture stores pour ink all over their furniture if it doesn't get bought. The salvation army throws away a lot of donations so there's a place to find some stuff. Make sure it's legal in your area.

I worked at pier 1 imports for a while and it was so depressing. If a customer was buying a product but decided not to take the discount due to chips/fraying it would be smashed with a hammer. Stuff that was easy to overlook or fix! It was crazy. I think stores should donate things like that instead.

As for the dumpster diving, I've never thought of it but if it were just samples or unopened things, I totally would!

I wouldn't consider it.

It is theft, if you do this you are stealing. The dumpster is company property, until the goods are retrieved by the waste management company they belong to the store. Taking from the trash is still shoplifting, and depending on how much you take, can range from petty theft (a misdemeanor) to grand theft (a felony). Do we really need to resurrect this topic? This got completely out of hand last time.

Erin most likely wasn't aware of the last thread. I'm sure if it's a problem, the moderators will take it down.

I personally wouldn't do it, because as some other girls mentioned, I don't know where any of that stuff has been. You could probably sanitize some stuff and it would be fine, but it's just not worth it to me. And it is illegal, although it seems kind of silly since it's pretty wasteful on the companies' part. I say to each her own. It does sound pretty intriguing lol.

Look up "Makeup dumpster diving" a lot pop up.

It could definitely be dirty and all that jazz but even if I could get past that aspect it is still against the law, which I cannot justify.

The only way I'd do it is if there was a stand alone sephora near. All of mine are in very busy malls and have several dumpsters that they share with the food court and such. A friend of mine goes dumpster diving all the time around the strip mall near her house, there's no food places and apparently the indie clothing store just tosses anything that has a hole in it. So she grabs it, washes it, sews it back together and sells it.
I get that it's illegal, but at least here in Canada, the cops don't care much, if they happened to see you they'd just say to stop and they'd walk away. But we have a large amount of homeless people that are going through for food or bottles or anything sellable that there's no point in charging them or anything, they'd have no way to pay it anyways.

I understand homeless people who do it 100% you've have to do what you have to do. I just find it selfish to break the law for some free makeup or hair product. Of course there are better ways to dispose of unwanted makeup such as donating it to foster children or teenagers from troubled families, but that is not how it works for now and I don't think there's any excuse to actually go and do something illegal for some free product

It is legal if in the street or on public property as it is considered public domain. If a dumpster is against a building or in a fence it is not legal, you could be charged for theft and disorderly conduct if you are blocking a sidewalk while doing it. Some towns have made dumpster diving 100% illegal though. There is the liability of the store if you get injured, as well as the possibility of people stealing from dumpsters and selling the product that has a lot of towns enforcing laws against it

Omg I have never heard of this so just searched videos and I would say for those brave enough to do it then do it the amount of stuff places through away is ridiculous and such a waste and I can't stand things going to waste I just wish I was brave enough to go into a bin :( not on my own anyway haha

Me neither Charlotte, I don't think this happens in England! I think our shops actually burn the stuff and smash it up before it goes in bins.
