Hi girls, just got my first tattoo. A warrior band on my under arm.
do any of you know how to take care of it so it will heal at its best, especially in the summer?

Do not wear black because it will suck the ink out of it. do not put lotion or any scented in it. Do not expose it to prolonged sun exposure until it healed. Do not pull the scabs off or itch them. Do not go swimming until it's healed. Do not take hot showers or expose it to prolonged water exposure (when you shower gently rub some unscented soap on it. the gold liquid dial works best and gently splash water on it) as for care use the baby aquaphor stuff that comes in a tub. it takes about 2 months for it to heal.

But seriously avoid swimming until it's healed at all costs. the chlorine isn't good for it and there's a lot of bacteria in pools.

Wash it off with unscented soap twice a day (gently). I used a&d afterwards. Also, unscented lotion after it heals will keep the tattooed area soft. Didn't your tattoo artist give you instructions?

Also, don't tan or expose it to the sun too much--even after it heals.

Your tattoo artist should've given you instructions and suggested products for you so you can take proper care of it. Justine and Stephanie have given great advice.

You should just call your artist and get specific instructions. Only they know the kind of ink you used and how your skin responded to it. It's always best to just follow your artist's advice.

Sorry Justine I know nothing about tattoos so this may be a dumb question but what do you mean by don't wear black?

I believe your tattoo artist should have told you how to take care of it?

When you first get a tattoo and while it's healing your not supposed to wear any black or dark clothing on it because it'll suck the ink out of your skin leaving you with a faded tattoo.

To everybody asking about her tattoo artist telling her how to take care of it a lot of them don't give proper care tips and I've experienced that before but I have multiple tattoos so I do know how to take care of them. a lot of artists just assume you know how.

The worst type of artists assume you know. Avoid those.

Agreed Ashlee. My artist told me before and after the tattoo, gave me a card, and made me repeat the instructions to him. He was also Red Cross certified, so he just may have been particularly anal about it. That's who I got the instructions I gave on this thread from.

That's great Stephanie G, lol my boyfriend is a tattoo artist here in a Pittsburgh and a lot of the points made were spot on. However, him and I disagree on the color of clothing worn. Wear whatever. It won't suck out your ink. If your ink is bleeding it's a natural occurrence of your body getting rid of what it doesn't need so at night wear crappy clothes and use cruddy sheets on your bed. Protect it from the sun always or it will fade. Tattoo Derm is great because it's like a beneficial protective bandaid but might be a bit late now. Not imperative just super simple and protective

Avoid neosporen at all cost and avoid bacitracin they will pull the ink out also. Use only a+d or tattoo approved ointment ( should be labeled). If you have to be in direct Sun for long periods ( or work in a dusty environment) cover the tattoo with gauze very loosely so it can still breathe.

As far as ointments go... A very thin layer

^^ agreed, you don't want to down it in ointment. personally I've had better success with ointments vs lotion. I kept getting a bad reaction with every lotion I tried, but everyone is different.

Hi girls, thank you all for your great advice!
my artist gave instructions but I hear so many different ones ;)
currently I use a healing creme which seems to work and I'm wearing sleeveless shirts, just to avoid as much contact as I can.
