Hi everyone! I just made a batch of homemade bronzer from cinnamon, cocoa powder and corn starch. I don't know what to think yet. Has anyone else tried this? Can you give your opinions? Thanks :)

Could be bad as far as cinnamon goes, I read that some people use it for bigger lips... My guess is that it reacts poorly with skin :/

Hmmmm... That's really interesting! Now I'm kind of scared :( how did it ruin your skin?

Cinnamon is definitely a no go for the skin, it can easily cause irritation. Personally I would avoid all DIYs since most of them contain ingredients that cause more harm than good to the skin.

Thank you, and sorry about that. I have just been really cautious about the ingredients put in brand name products. Plus, This seemed like a great way to save money. But money isn't worth ruining my skin. Do you have any suggestions on good, actually natural brands? Thanks again :)

Yeah, tarte products seem to be a hit and miss on what the ingredients are :( I shall look at those and see if I can find a good bronzer to my liking

What ingredients are you looking to avoid?

Pretty much everything :( I have super sensitive skin, which is why I was unsure of using the homemade makeup. I follow the EWG database to help me with ingredients, so I know what I'm putting on my face. Sorry I can't be specific :(

For example bareminerals totally broke me out :( but tarte bb primer was fine. It's just that I she my found a brand that is consistently non toxic

I think the bronzer will work without the cinnamon. But I agree with Jacqlyn, Tarte is a great makeup line. I don't know if you've heard of them, but the brand Younique is also natural. Most of their products are gluten free and some are even vegan

Thank you!! What is the most natural bronzer from tarte, that isn't a contour, but will slightly slim my face?

I would be careful getting your information from Environmental Working Group, a biased organization with very dubious credibility that tends to twist information to suit their agenda.

If you have ingredient sensitivities, avoid those specific ingredients. Otherwise, use whatever products you want. All products sold commercially go through the same rigorous safety and purity testing before they are placed on the shelves available to consumers. Words like "all natural" are advertising gimmicks that are completely unregulated and mean absolutely nothing.

If the prevalence of big scary-sounding words on labels is concerning to you, take an organic chemistry course or study cosmetic chemistry. If you want to know how things react with your body and your skin, brush up on medical science (such as immunology, dermatology, and food science).

DIY options are (9 times out of 10) misguided attempts to needlessly avoid things that people have been conditioned to fear by what I've started to call the Cult of Organic. These people that lack any understanding of basic chemistry, who live by the rallying cry of "If I can't pronounce it, it must be dangerous", and have decided to return to the cosmetic and hygiene equivalent of the Stone Age simply because they fear "chemicals". It comes from a startling lack of scientific literacy, a willingness to blindly slather random crap from the kitchen all over oneself because one saw it on a popular website (hence my Cult analogy), and a complete absence of any rational or common sense! I mean my god, some of these "remedies" just recommend terrible things! Cinnamon burns, why would anyone willingly put that on their bare skin? Lemon is ACID. I once saw someone espousing combining salt and ice to cure acne. Are you kidding me??

I digress. Stay away from homemade unless you are using cosmetic grade ingredients in a sterile environment with proper instruments. If you'd like to learn how to make your own loose mineral eyeshadow or gloss lipsticks, TKB Trading, a cosmetic wholesaler, has supplies and recipes that you can purchase. They also sell pure micro silica that can be used as a setting powder, if you're a fan of MUFE HD powder and don't like paying the ridiculous markup that MUFE puts on theirs. ;)

Thank you! The only thing is that they don't safety checks cosmetics rigorously. (At least not in the US) They allow facial creams with Mercury in it, as well as lipstick with lead. To me, that is unacceptable. And it isn't only the EWG database that gives this information, the app that provides the ingredients and the safety gets information from not only EWG, but university studies as well. Personally I don't want to put DNA damaging ingredients on my face, which many products have. The average woman puts about 500 chemicals on her face. But yeah... I haven't used the cinnamon since haha.
