I would say don't make it to matched up to your skin color.

Use both your skin color and your lips color and just experiment until you find a shade that works

You have to choose a good makeup brand and make sure it's original.

Honestly I don't even care about the whole undertones, I never pay attention to that.
I just make sure it doesn't make me look "dead" and it isn't my exact skin color.
I like to make sure it has some color like Velvet teddy by MAC.

Ones who trick I've heard of is taking a black and white picture of yourself with the lipstick on and the lipstick shouldn't be lighter than your face.
