If you mean DIY sunscreens, I've only seen one on YouTube. It was a sesame oil sunscreen it was around spf 8 which is pretty useless haha. However, there are vegan and cruelty free options if your interested :)

Both coconut oil and Shea butter have natural UV protection.

A lot of "natural" or diy sunscreens are very low in SPF so I think you're better off just buying one. I personally like soap and glory's one.

Coconut and shea do not offer enough UV protection to be of any help for the skin. A rating of 2-3 SPF is no protection and I wouldn't even advise someone to use them for protection. If you are seeking a natural way that will actually be truly beneficial look into investing in clothing that has UV protection infused in the fabric. If you type in UV protection clothing or UV clothing a bunch of information will pop up on the subject. Its on the expensive side but its far better than the alternative.

Zinc oxide or titanium oxide are physical sunscreen ingredients...rather than chemical sunscreen options. You may want to look into sunscreens based on those. Hats, sunglasses and seeking shade are also a bonus, as usual.

Coconut oil and Shea butter have an spf on average of 4-6 actually. On a fair skinned individual that would provide burn protection for 60mins. On average it provides 90 mins and on darker skin tones a spf of 6 provides 120mins. So I will disagree with you Shelley and will continue to advise people to use them. If you reapply (as you should) these two natural alternatives provide good protection.

@Tara...we're entitled to our opinions but science doesn't lie and considering my spouse is a dermo he has heard this myth countless times from patients who used coconut oil as SPF protection only to endure surgical removal of melanoma and other horrible procedures. According to the Amercian Academy of Dermatology the oil is well below their recommendation of skin protection (the ideal is SPF30 which blocks 97% of UV rays). The best alternative is mineral based sunscreens such as what Rozberry suggested and its what my husband suggest to his patients concerned about using something more on the natural side than a chemical based SPF as the minerals coat the top level of skin versus being absorbed by the skin.

Just want to add that a brand names Coola has really good natural ingredients in their sunscreens :)
