A little background story: I have naturally blonde hair, I dyed it darker for a few years, then bleached it back to blonde again about two years ago and haven't dyed/chemically treated it since. A few days ago I decided that I wanted to dye my hair darker again, so I used boxed dye on it and the top layer of my hair didn't take the dye well. So today I dyed it again with box dye and got the same results: the top layer of my hair just isn't taking the dye like the rest of it. What can I do to get all of my hair to take the dye evenly?

That essentially means that your cuticle is blown open and needs a filler. your hair is over processed and damaged. when the cuticle is blown open, your hair can't grab color. your best bet would be to go to a professional. they will treat it properly with a proteine filler.

I don't know what is available to the public, but you should be able to find something at a supply store. I'll usually ise a semi permanent color with a proteine based developer and use that to fill. process that, rinse then apply color as normal. shaye, if Joico is available to you then I recomend joico k pak treatment. it is mainly keratin and will help build your hair back up but be careful with protein and keeatin, it is possible to over do it and make your hair worse.

I did some research and everyone seems to be saying I need to get a protein filler and apply that before dye. Do I apply the filler to my whole head or only the part that won't take color?
(I definitely don't have the cash for a professional, so I have to do it all myself)

It won't hurt to put it on your whole head. also, if you can find equalizing solution that would be great too. check at sallys. it's a solution that is sprayed on before color or any chemical service to equal out the porosity of your hair. that will help the color grab more evenly.

Thanks Kelly! Joico is available here so I'll definitely have to look into that. It's mainly where my hair was blonde previously where I'm having trouble with dye holding haha. Hopefully this will help a little. Thanks! :)
