What kinda brush stroke do you do? Do you draw a line? How far do you come down the cheek bone?

Contouring is not easy and is quite difficult to explain through text, especially since there are different face and nose shapes so one technique cannot be used for all faces. I learned by watching YouTube videos and lots of trial and error figuring out what is best for my face. So check out YouTube, watch a bunch of vids from many girls with many face shapes, and figure out which shape fits you most and try to use that youtuber as a guide. I know that probably wasn't the answer you wanted but I hoped I helped a little bit.

Jaclyn hill has a contour video that really helped me! =)

I agree with Karen it depends on your face shape and also the finish you want that should determine how you apply it - I don't really contour because I like a more natural look but I'll highlight certain areas of my face and sometimes apply bronzer to my cheeks to give a sun kissed glow (mind you bronzer should never be used to contour) but that's it - otherwise they usually advise that you stop your line once you hit the plane that crosses the middle of your eye and don't go any further than that but everyone's face is different just do what looks good on you.

The questions you have are very face shape specific. The Smashbox trio palette and sticks have a face shape guide of where to put your contour, highlight, and bronzer for your face shape. Youtube is good as a guideline, but can be a little misleading as a lot of girls use bronzer and I do not recommend it as bronzers are very warm in color and a contour is supposed to be mimicking a shadow. Not saying it can't be done, just wouldn't recommend it.

The supermodel sculpt card from Toofaced was helpful for me. I used different products than theirs but it gives a good idea. Wayne Goss contouring video was also helpful.

For cheekbones place your thumbs in the middle of your cheek and move upward. You can find the actual contour of your cheek bone then. If you dip your thumb in some contouring product you will have a little map of where to contour. You definitely want to be careful and err on the side of caution when it comes to ending the contour in a natural place and not too close to the mouth.
I think contouring can be really beautifully natural, especially with a paired down makeup look.
