Yeah I go with BH Cosmetics. I don't like elf that much except their kabuki brushes, I don't think any of them are good quality but then again their only a dollar

Real technique or Sonia kashuk from target are the best. They are pricey-ish but they are less than $20.

Yes you are right, there are what seems to be about a million brushes and it is a bit overwhelming lol. Don't worry I am still getting in the hang of it too! But first off, for beginners you should definitely look into Real Techniques brushes. They're perfect! If you are using liquid foundation, real techniques has the "expert face brush" which is used for foundation application. It makes it go on and blend flawlessly! There's also a big powder brush for overall powder application to set your foundation. Then they have separate ones for the blush & bronzer also. Stippling brush is for lightweight application of powder, bronzer, or foundation, kind of like for an airbrushed effect where it looks natural. They have a lot more, It's simple, they have the names and what the brush is for on each of their packaging! So overall, real techniques has amazing brushes for beginners just like you and I :)

Big powder brush ( I loove the one from ecotools, they sell them at any drugstore), a flat foundation brush (eco tools or sonia kashuk), and any angled brush.

Get a flat top kabuki brush. it can be used for all steps of face makeup. you can find affordable ones from Color Studio and Blank Canvas. or a more expensive one like from Sigma. just one brush would get you through all steps so investing in it would be worthwhile :)

EBay brushes should be good enough for beginner. Usually, the more make up you apply and the more you feel comfortable with your application the more brushes you will try and you will get more expensive higher end ones! You know, you build your way up to the best Brushes.

Real techniques for sure, I wanted to get some new brushes and I got the core collection kit for sale, I've had it for two days and only tried the buffing brush so far but I love them already, they're so soft and even after being washed the first time there wasn't any shedding, very pleased :)

Real techniques would be your best bet. Although the IT cosmetics brush for Ulta are amazing. I replaced most of my mac face brushes with those. They are incredibly soft and easy to use with the most flawless finish. They are not cheap if sold individually. They do have the sets but they are not as good quality as the individual. I actually returned my brush set because I was so disappointed in it and ended up just getting more individuals. If you are on a budget, real techniques are really really really great for the price.

I like the real techniques brushes
You can get them at London drugs, if you have that store where you live
I'm pretty sure you can get them lots of places though
I particularly like the expert face brush for my foundation, it really makes putting foundation on fast and easy
