Would highlights help?

I am currently attempting to grow out my natural hair color. My hair is currently a medium brown, and I am naturally blonde. I am thinking about getting some highlights that match my natural color, so my grown out roots don't look as harsh. Would highlights make the transition easier? I have about 2 inches of roots.

I actually think the idea of being highlights would be great. It would definitely make the transition a little less harsh.
