Hello,
I don't ever break out but when I do its awful cystic acne that is big, hurts, and will not go away. They leave scars behind that has left my skin blotchy and hyperpigmented. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on things that will reduce or eliminate the cystic acne and left behind scars/hyperpigmentation?
Thanks!

What's your current face regime?

I use glycolic/lactic acid peels and a fading serum for scars and hyper pigmentation. I've had very good results.

Dermalogica c-12 pure bright serum is very good, I swear by that product and the peels help prep your skin for absorbing the product.

I also moisturize with Jojoba and Argan oil which has rebalanced oil production on my face and cut down on breakouts. Those I still do get leave scars, but that regime has helped a lot.

Drink water, & place tea tree oil on it every night & morning. Make sure the tea tree is diluted.

Cystic acne is often hormonal, so it's best treated by going to a derm or a regular doctor if you can't afford it. Even with insurance issues you can usually get a pretty cheap doctor's appointment, or even planned parenthood for BC. You can also avoid foods high in hormones, including dairy, soy and flax. Drinking 2+ Liters of water daily and getting lots of fruits and veggies will also help your skin be more healthy in general. Tea tree oil makes a great spot treatment but as cystic acne is usually deep in the skin it will have limited benefits. Wearing sunscreen, exfoliating regularly (but being careful not to pop acne and spread bacteria around, not picking and using a spot tx or brightening product can help with dark spots. Look for ingredients like vitamin C, licorice root extract or glycolic acid high in the ingredients list when picking a dark spot cream.

Thanks for the advice! A lot of useful info I didn't know! I'll definitely need to stop by the dermatologist if I can and see if they have any suggestions of things I can do/take.

Agree with jack! You need to see a derma. That's the only thing that got rid of mine. No matter what you put on your face. Won't help or completely make it go away. If you're looking for something more permanent then I'd say go to the dermatologist for sure. Good luck.

I have cystic acne as well and I realize it's triggered by hormones and food allergies mainly - so I notice if I stick to a healthy diet and try to keep my stress levels low then I can usually stay clear of acne - but when I do get a flare up I use the Mario badescu line and it was made specifically to target cystic acne with the buffering lotion - it's a spot treatment that brings the acne to a head or makes the under the skin bumps disappear altogether - it works fast and is pretty great - also leaves minimal scarring afterwards - for the scars I use a BHA exfoliant by paulas choice paired with her vitamin c serum - and I saw the scars lighten dramatically after 2 weeks and now my scars are barely noticeable - I have photos in profile of my personal struggle with it all.

But my acne isn't that bad so these things worked for my minor issues with it - but if you have a real bad problem then I agree a dermatologist will be your best bet.

What products from that line do you use diana?

From Mario badescu I use their acne cleanser, and I've tried a lot of their toners - for acne their special cucumber lotion/toner is best and then I also love their masks - the drying mask and healing masks are both good for cystic acne - the drying mask also works well with the buffering lotion - I love all their products for the most part and they have something for every skin type too - and they can give you a free skin assessment and product list too for your personal skin type.
