I'm looking desperately for a good eye palette with different shades of cool-toned purple, ideally for a sort-of smokey eye.

That's a gradient eye:)

I believe Maybelline, L'Oreal and Bourjois do small (3 and 4 shadows) palettes which are different shades of one colour, I'm pretty sure they have a purple one:)

^ agreed. Most drugstore brands will have small palettes focusing around one color.

Maybelline has a great one! I'm blanking on the name, but it's rather small and has 4 colors.

I have the petal pusher palette and I really like it. It's great for a smoky eye and I love the purple shades. The colors blend well
