Why does my top coat betray me?

So, my nail game is on the better side of average. I can do a standard manicure very well, with even coverage, smooth application, and little to no spillage onto my cuticles. When it comes to doing nail art though, I'm hopeless. Once, I managed to paint French tips, and it was a momentous occasion!
So, onto my question: why is it that when I put a top coat on my manicure, the color underneath seems to thin out and be sort of washed away when I brush on the top coat. This happens when I let the color coat dry for 2 minutes, or 2 hours. The only time I'm able to avoid the "washout" caused by my top coat is if I let the color underneath dry overnight or longer. Does this happen to anyone else? Anyone know the reason that this happens? (I have a feeling there's some complex chemical reaction going on that's way more advanced than what I remember from high school.) I've used TONS of different topcoat brands, and it happens with every single one! If anyone can recommend a topcoat that doesn't smudge or "washout" the color underneath, please let me know. Many thanks to all!

Following. I have the same issue! doesn't matter how many minutes/hours/days I put the top coat on! I can even see the color in the top coat bottle!  :(

It could just be the brand of nail polish. I've found that most of the time it's not the top coat but the polish. I use a sally Hansen quick dry top coat as well as an acrylic top coat. And both those work okay with julep polish but any other polish it runs. It almost turns it back to liquid.

Hmm I've honestly never had this happen to me. :/ I'd try and make sure you're putting your color on in very thin layers, letting it dry completely before adding the next. Also, it could be the topcoat. I use a few that I love that are excellent quality, Seche Vite, American Classic's Gelous, and Essie Out the Door are a few of my top favs. They are a bit more pricey though. I've heard really good things about OPI's range of topcoats too if you haven't tried them.

It could be the top coat that's bad - I use OPI top coat and this doesn't happen to me.

I have found some polishes are guilty and some of my inexpensive top coats have given me that problem as well. I try to limit how many strokes I use to apply my top coat. What brands of top coats have you tried?

I've tried Sally Hansen, OPI, Revlon 2 Week Wear (I don't think they make that anymore), a variety of topcoats from Julep, and one other from Sally Beauty Supply, but I can't remember the brand name. I should have mentioned that just about all of my polishes are Julep, Essie, or OPI, so I don't think it's a quality issue. Red polishes seem to be the worst offenders. I have so many bottles of topcoat that have a pink tint to them from the red polish! I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. Thanks for the advice ladies :)
