To get highlights you have to remove the pigment from your hair using bleach.

I don't think u can really di highlights without lighting your hair some levels.

in order to get highlight you have to lift(bleach) the hair more than 3 levels of you natural color in order for them to be considered highlights, but the question is what look are you going for?
