It depends what you want. I always like to use highlighter because it brightens my face more but I don't use it all the time.

How is highlighter supposed to be applied?

Most people usually apply highlighter above their cheekbones, on their cupid'a bow(the little V above your lips) and sometimes very lightly on the bridge of your nose! Hope it helps!

Nothing is "necessary", you don't "need" anything. If you like the way it looks on your face, then go for it. If you think it's a hassle and that it doesn't suit your face, then don't do it. Makeup is 100% subjective. Do what makes you feel good

I hate highlighters...and pretty much any shimmer of any kind. I do, however, achieve the same brightening effect and dewy glow using other methods that don't require me to put reflective particles on my face.

You can use a shimmery white or champagne color eyeshadow as a highlighter it's cheeper and if you have the naked pallet you can use Virgin as a highlight

To Sophia:

Color correcting will brighten areas of the face. I guess it depends on your skin tone, but I use a pale yellow on my cheekbones and under my brows and a very light concealer color on my cupid's bow (obviously, you have to blend this method really well, but it works amazingly). You can get a good finish that will give you the same sheen that luminizers do if you use cream formulations (just cream, not cream-to-powder). Actually, for blush I just use semi-matte lipstick. It's not shiny but it definitely doesn't go into a powder finish.
