Well the prime time to tan is between 10am and 2pm. That's when UV rays are strongest (And most dangerous. Just a warning!) And the main way to tan quicker is to invest in a tanning oil. And if you don't want to take the time to tan naturally, you can use a self tanning lotion. Here's a few Tanning Oils and a Tanning Lotion :)
Top Left is Banana Boat Deep Tanning Oil
Top Right is Hawaiian Tropic Deep Tanning Oil
Bottom Left is Australian Gold Bronzing Intensifier
Bottom Right is Fake Bake Flawless Self Tanning Lotion :)
I hope I helped! Xx

Tanning oils work well as previously mentioned but can also make you burn faster. Being pool side or in a body of water can reflect the suns rays back at you and increase the tanning rate. I personally use the Banana Boat tanning oil and loooove the way it smells!

Thanks ladies I'll have to try the oil

Tessandra is correct, between 10am-3pm is the best time to tan. You should be most cautious right at noon as the run is directly in the sky therefore you are getting the most direct UV Rays, I personally don't recommend you tan 11:30-1:30 unless your skin type is higher than a four and your skin actually needs that vitamin d and can handle the intensity. One thing I will say though is, invest in a proper tanning lotion. Most Indoor tanning salons have actually banned the use of tanning OILs because when they react to UV light they erode the acrylic in the beds. Now, imagine how great that is on your skin! Tanning oils work by moisturizing the skin and allowing your skin to absorb more you've light than regular, as your skin naturally deflects 75% of you've Rays (more when it's dryer). The best way to allow your skin to absorb the you've Rays is to keep yourself moisturized and exfoliate. Now, onto actual tanning lotions. There are many different types of tanning lotions and I will describe them all to you, but the one thing I can't stress enough is to go get a high end lotion, not a drug store one. The difference?
Tyrosine. Tyrosine is an ingredient that stimulates the melanin and allows you to tan to your maximum potential with less needed exposure (which is much better for your skin). Any reputable tanning salon should carry lines such as Devoted creations (the best by far), supratan or threvo- these lines all contain a multitude of lotions in all price ranges!

Accelorators/maximizers: this is your average tanning lotion, contains tyrosine to stimulate your natural melanin but will only get you as dark as you would naturally get. Great starter lotion, or for those with lower skin types.

Bronzers: of course, contain tyrosine to give you a deep tan, but also use cosmetic or natural ingredient bronzers to get you even darker. Come in many different strengths and if used properly are nothing to be afraid of. The fear here is getting "orange" which is really not the case unless you're Casper the ghost using a 100x bronzer.

Tingles: tingle lotions draw the red blood cells to the surface of the skin, and accelerate your tan. It is a slightly itchy tingly feeling which some hate, I do personally enjoy it. I don't recommend using in intense sun for long periods of time because it is a bit easier to burn when your skin is that vulnerable. If used properly delivers amazing effects in no time- can also come with bronzers.

Hawaiian Tropis is the only sun tan/ sunscreen lotion I use. It is amazing and smells wonderful. The tanning oil reallllllly works. But it is really thick but also runny at the same time. So careful.

I work at a camp and we always use the hawaiin tropic 30 sunscreen then put the lotion on in places we want a bit darker. It seems to work. Don't know if it's right or anything but that's what we do.
