Will you be sitting on the floor with small children? Will you be involved in food prep or doing physical labor? What time of day and what type of venue is it? These all play factors in chosing what to wear.
That's wonderful of you to volunteer! I think for a church event or school in where the focus is on very young children with few adults, regardless of your activities, Solid leggings that are thick and booties is indeed a great suggestion. I'd personally opt for an oversized blouse rather than a sweater because these types of events often get very warm. You can always wear a cardi with a cami beneath, black jeans and flats or even a knit skirt with tights. Comfortable, but still casual in style.
If the event is at a hall in the evening with lots of adults where you will be dining and you are monitoring and helping out in way that has a lower physical activity level, then I'd pass on jeans and instead wear a dressier blouse, or cardi with a knit skirt and leather boots or booties....even heels if the event is dressier in nature, but still keep comfortable, so if you go with heels, a tried and true comfortable pair would work. A jersey or knit blend dress that is long enough to graze the knees with tights works for either event and you can dress it up or down with accessories. I'd include a small cross front purse if you decide to bring a purse. Bring a travel size kleenex and a little hand sanitizer. Children often get runny noses and if you are shaking lots of hands or helping keep little ones with food or tending to a runny nose, the sanitizer and tissue will come and in handy.
Have fun!
