I struggled with the same thing-still do. But my curls seems to stay longer when I curl 1-2 day old hair, not recently washed. And after each curl, I hold it in my hand and then take a bobby pin and secure the bundled up curl to my head, then before I go out I let them loose and use hairspray.

My moms hair doesn't hold a curl either but when she does pin curls they last all day have you tried that

Make sure you're not using a heavy conditioner. Your hair could just be weighed down too much. And second day hair helps too. Probably the best bet is to curl, spray the curl and then pin it and spray all over.

Tease the hair slightly and take smaller sections. Try and spray slightly before curling the strand but do not over spray.

Use the bed head curli-pop. my cousin has the same problem and her hair hold the curls for 2 days w. the curli-pop.

Also using oil as conditioner helps oddly enough for me. Not sure why but try washing your hair and using a little bit of coconut or argan oil to condition and see what happens.

Yes I've noticed my hair holds straightener curls longer than my wand curls.. when I was younger my hair was so thick and wavy curls would be so easy now my hair is straight and thin it's harder but with patience, unwashed oily hair and hairspray it'll get there. Have you tried like curling rods or curlers over night?

I can't use an iron, as the curls go limp and fall out within hours. I use a beveled edge flat iron, hot rollers, sponge rollers or flexirods. Of all of the, sponge rollers last the longest...with a flat iron being next up. My stick straight hair holds curls for days with a flat iron.

*a curling iron is what I meant I can't use and wands don't last me either..

Flexirods and Rollers can do big, bouncy curls and rods are great for waves that won't fall. It depends on their size. I use mine with Mizani Foam Wrap Lotion. My fav is still admittedly a rounded flat iron because it delivers instant results that last all week..falling into great waves, but I still roll my hair often and enjoy that I'm not using heat. Sometimes I roll in the morning for when I'm going out, on a Saturday, for example...so no sleeping in them. I use the foam on those occasions on *slightly* damp hair, but I have rolled wet and slept in them as well.

I learned how to curl with a flat irin by watching a tutorial on how to curl with a flat iron from Kandee Johnson. Hot rollers, which I also use, you can do that with. I actually have a pic of me in my hot rollers on my profile. And with style extending products and Kenra Hairspray, those curls fall into gorgeous waves as time progresses. I roll really quick because I've been rolling since grade school, but I give rollers and flexirods 12 hours. Now, on mostly dry hair with my styling lotion, I can get killer, full waves with 8. For a beginner, rods might be easiest...and any beauty supply should have them, but I tend to favor black beauty supply stores because the selection (here) is much better and I've found them more knowledgeable with rolling as a whole. This is just my own personal experience. I honestly don't know anyone offline other than my own stylist who rolls, as my friends all use wands and curling irons. I section my head and don't roll up to the scalp with rods/sponge rollers or the curl is too high for my tastes...it shortens the length as well. I have 2 sets of sizes to roll my hair (which falls mid-breast) and when I use hot rollers, I roll all of my hair to the scalp...other than what frames my face. Those sections, I roll forward, not backward..and leave about 2 inches between the roller and my scalp. I think the clips they give with rollers these days make it so quick and easy...for both regular rollers as well as hot, as you don't have to play with any pins. Even if your hot rollers come with pins, you can get clips for cheap at the beauty supply or Ulta. A great, flexible hairspray and (for me) hot rolling a day after washing works best if I'm going to roll hot.

On my profile, it shows what the curl size will be of large roller, with a flexible spray, on long hair. I use large, Jumbo and Medium. In that pic, they are a mix of Large and Jumbo hot rollers.

I'm so sorry you are hurting. I imagine hair is the least of your troubles at the moment. Rest well, hun.
