Definitely check youtube! Lilith Moon and Bebexo are both braid experts and have tutorials on more basic braids. But as Mg said, it will just take practice. It's frustrating at first, but you WILL get the hang of it. And once it comes to you, you will be amazed at how quickly you can do it. It just becomes muscle memory, but your fingers need the training first.

Definitely practice. I used to just braid my hair while watching TV, and during commercial breaks or after an episode I'd go look in the mirror to see if it looks good, and do it again. I have been braiding my own hair my entire life, my mom doesn't know how to French braid, just a basic braid and I love complex braids lol. My best tip is keep at least one hand very close to your head at all times to keep the tension and not have it be really loose. It's tempting to use your hands by pulling them all the way to the other side and not against the scalp, but it'll turn into a really loose braid by doing that. So I keep one hand against my scalp and let the other hand grab pieces and do whatever needs to be done, and then switch hands. I hope this makes sense lol.

Practice a LOT!! I find it incredibly difficult to do if I look in the mirror and do it as the mirror shows everything opposite, so I get confused on where to move my hands. I learnt by feeling where it should go and knowing the motions. If it's any consolation, I find dutch braiding my own hair a ton easier than french braiding

I don't really know what to add since the other girls covered it all!! Braids can be kinda weird and you might not get it but just keep working. Like my hands work so that I can only dutch braid my own hair but I can french braid my friends hair easily. Also it's easiest to braid dry hair that has some sort of texture spray in it like sea salt spray or damp hair. Good luck :)
