I find that outlining your lips with a lip liner first that is a similar color to the lipstick, then filling your lips with a lipstick gives great results. It also helps the lipstick stay in place.

Liquid lipsticks is also great because it doesn't smear like traditional lipstick. However, that is a bit more tricky to apply.
You can also apply a setting powder over your lipstick. This will also make it matte.

Hmm have you tried using a brush to apply? They can be far more precise. Afterwards, you can go around the edges with some concealer for a sharp defined look.

I'd recommend (in this order)
1) apply lip liner in a shade similar to the lipstick
2) apply lipstick to a small lip brush
3) apply on bottom lip and rub/smack your lip
4) apply as necessary on top lip
5) apply concealer around the edges to sharpen lines(:
I would recommend starting with nude colors so any mistakes won't be as easy to spot until you build your confidence with application(:

A tip is not to outline your lip liner around your lips but kind of shade them in alittle with the lip liner too!
