Wasn't sure where to put this so settled on Beauty as it's more of a general question than specifically about hair, makeup or style. Feel free to move it if it's categorised wrongly!

Anyway, at some point in the near future I'm going to need some photos done (not professionally, it'll only be for an online dating profile so nothing major :P) but it's been ages since I took photos of myself (I've lost about 10lbs and cut off my hair since my last decent picture :P) and I need some tips as I'm not the most photogenic of people when I'm purposely taking a photo.

Has anyone got any tips? It can range from anything from tips about posing and lighting to makeup and hair tips!

Thanks for any help!

The best tip for photography is definitely good lighting. And make sure to use angles too. Good luck😊

Thanks Isabella but I'm not sure what you mean by "use angles", could you elaborate please?

Natural light..such as near a sunny window is great. Watch overhead lighting and angles for shadows. Make up on a phone pic, for me, needs to be a bit heavier around the eyes, cheeks and lips. Foundation isn't issue for me. I think some of my best photos were taken near a window or outdoors in indirect sunlight so there's no squinting..lol

^ @rozberry has solid advice
I would also ask your friends if they have a nice picture of you or to take one for you
I tend to look better in candid shots

Sorry Rebecca for not being clear enough. What I mean is taking pictures at different angles. Like tilting the camera or something like that.

Thanks Rozberry and May.

I haven't got any candid shots (I'm exactly the same, I think I look so much better when it's a spontaneous picture, haha) of my new hair yet as I haven't even been out with it yet, haha. I'll definitely be asking for pictures off my friends though!

Hi! It rally depends on what photos you want to take. Head shots or body shots etc. Honestly, the most flattering photos are usually at the Golden Hour, an hour before sunset or sunrise, where the lighting is perfect! Also, figure out your angles, usually the left side of the face but it really depends! Hope that helps! <3.

Yes, EVERYONE looks best with the "down shot" angle! Another great tip is to stick your neck out forward, and angle your chin down, slightly. Sounds weird- and feels weird - but practice taking pics and you'll see the difference. Also, NEVER take a photo just straight on. Always angle your body/posture, etc. Different shapes and angles make the subject appear more interesting. And I completely agree with the natural lighting - there is a spot in the master bathroom where the sun shines in and gives my face a spectacular glow! Like Bash H. said, it depends on the kind of photos you want to take. Practice, practice, practice, and have fun!

Lighting is key...try to use natural light, so stand in front of a window so that the sunlight is shining in on you. If you don't use natural light you have to be very careful of unflattering shadows.
Makeup generally needs to
be a bit heavier than in real life as the camera can wash you out, so put on more than you think you need.
Generally pictures of your face straight on aren't the most flattering so try angling your face a bit to the left or right or tilted slightly...everyone's angles are different so you'll need to play around till you find your best angles.
Good luck :-)
