This Sunday I will be photographing my friend and her husband for their anniversary, and I am going to do her hair and makeup. She doesn't wear a lot of makeup, but she wants some for pictures. Here is my dilemma, her skin tone is darker than mine , so I don't really know where to begin or what colors/ products to use... Here is a picture of her and me. How should I apply it so that it just accentuates her features. And what lip colors would suit her? Also any tips for what will photograph well? Such as highlighting, finish of lipstick, etc...

I don't know if you have time to find something like this, but the best thing for you to get would be a foundation palette. It comes with all different colors of foundation in it. Also a concealer palette as well. I freelance as a makeup artist and I constantly get hired for photo shoots. It's best to do a natural finish with everything unless it calls for otherwise. Ask your friend what colors of eyeshadow and blush and lipstick she is most comfortable in. It's always best to keep the lips with a natural finish as well! Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Emma! I would love a foundation and concealer palette, but I have not seen anything like that in Bolivia 😔 however I will be in the states this winter so I could pick some up then! Any recommendations for a starter palette? And I will ask her then! I didn't know if there were things to stay away from, such as a dark eye, stuff like that.

I forgot to add in my initial post that she doesn't wear foundation, she has very sensitive skin. However she has a translucent mattifying powder that works for her, would that be ok to use?

Hello I am nee here can you guys tell me how this works?

Stephanie if you have a question you need to make your own thread. You can do that by pressing the plus sign on the bottom right of the talk page. You can ask anything as long as it's beauty related. Other people from the BL community will answer your question. Everyone here has there own thing that they are good at and can offer help. For example Taylor who made this thread is really good at nail art. Hope this helped😀

Definitely ask her what her skin type is first! Dry, combo, oily? If she is oily or combo, I would definitely go for Makeup Forever Face & Body or Mat Velvet (if she's more oily). If she has dry skin the Makeup Forever HD or Laura Mercier Silk Creme is great. Instead of buying these foundations have her (that way they can color match her) go get samples if you can (Sephora is great for this). I would also do a trial makeup first if you have time and take some photos to see what you need to change (like adding more blush, eyeliner, lips, etc.). As for eyemakeup go with something neutral and you'll want to apply a little heavier so it will show up better in the photos. As for lip color it kinda depends on what she's going to be wearing.

A good foundation sort of sample palette is the RCMA ones. There are two I believe and they have a broad spectrum of skin colors.
The formula also works well for like every skin type and photographs beautifully

As for lip colors, things with peachy or coral tones will look good as far as nudes.
For photos I like the look of mattes because they tend to be more true-to-color compared to say.. A frost finish.
Some gloss could work over or creamy types of lipsticks if you want a more fun sort of youthful look.

As for eye makeup, I'd go with warm shades and the you can go in and define more with a cool toned shade.

TK are you taking the picture's outside or inside? Do you have a idea what she's looking for? RCMA(side note rcma doesn't fit all skin types) it's great I have both 10 and 11 double stocked lol but you can pretty much use any foundation, it truly comes down to your application and shade. Don't over load with highlighters that will show off the bat but since your taking the picture's you'll be able to fix it or get the idea on what I'm talking about. OK Here's something you can do, apply your makeup on and take your own picture's and look at the finish results of your application. Also remember to bring the foundation to the ears and neck ( if she's going to show neck & chest area's). Get familiar with angles and lighting and placement on the face. :)

We'll be outside, and she basically left it up to me, which is why I don't really know what to do 😂 I never thought about applying on myself and photographing it to see how it turns out! Thank you so much Alma!! This is super helpful!!

No worries TK you'll get it, I've been doing freelance for years and you learn as you go, once you get the idea you'll be awesome at it. If you want to see what rcma looks like on skin from a photo shoot I have a few picture's up on my profile titled Rcma.I was a bit confused that Aurora suggested the product since she mentioned a day ago she was ordering samples and had not tried it yet but once she tries it she'll give truthful feed back of it as well and can understand the process of application with such a product. If you get your hand's on it TK please feel free to ask about application; )

I will definitely look into it! I love how it looks in that photo! I just wish I could get it for this shoot, but come November hopefully I can get it in the states!! I am hoping to start taking on more clients come winter time, and the rcma palette will be perfect! Thank you so much 😊

Can't wait for you to try it out. Does she have any makeup on hand?

She has eye shadows and lipstick, but she does not wear foundation or anything like that. I was hoping she could meet me at a store tomorrow so that I can find some foundation and blush to match.

And I just found out she will be wearing a blue dress, what lip colors would work? She can rock a red lip, but I don't know if it is too much for pictures...

That's a great idea and do a trial run with her so she agrees with the look before the shoot. She can rock the red lip TK that's fine you just got to make a balance on the look she wants. Pick her brain a bit have her show you some ideas and vice versa. Your a team at this point and the out come will be great. :)
