No matter how hard I try to do a messy bun, I can't... Any tips or tricks you use to make a cute messy bun? Thanks!

I loop my hair into a regular ponytail with the first twist of the hair band, then on the second twist I only pull my hair halfway through (leaving the ends loose) and on the third twist I just secure it more. Then I pull bits out at the front and sides of my face.
OR
I twist my hair from the ends to just above the root (it ends up looking like a bantu knot, or as my friend so kindly put it, 'dog turd') and twirl it round so it lays flat-ish, then I secure it with a hair band and bobby pins

I use a texturizing spray. I find that if my hair is too soft, putting it in a bun doesn't work. It looks droopy and flat. A texturizing spray will give your hair more grab when using an elastic. With this you can get more of a messy look, but it'll stay put :)

Don't overthink it. Let your hair get roughed up a little or use some hairspray to add some texture. I shake it up a bit, put it in a ponytail, pull on the edges a bit, add a little more hairspray, twist around, and secure with another hair tie or bobby pins. Just kind of go for it and see what happens. You can always go back and fix especially since it's supposed to look a bit messy :)

My messy bun usually is the product of day 2 curls, curl your hair as you usually do for texture and follow that by gathering it all onto the top of your head and snapping in a pony tail holder let me know if you'd like a video for this :)

Mine looks best when I sleep with my hair out, and then don't brush it the next day so it's messy & textured and not super soft/clean.
