Just before I ring up and ask for an appointment, is there usually anything hairdressers can do to strip my hair of dye to my natural color? Experience? Please please!

Just ask them to dye your hair back as closest to your natural color as they can get. If you bleached your hair, it will fade to a lighter color, but eventually you can get your original hair color back. (I've bleached my hair three times.)
