For all you mommy's out there who are supporting your family.. basically is being a mua or working in that industry paying the bills? sorry don't know if that's too personal of a question. but basically I've always wanted to be in the beauty/makeup industry as a career growing up. I never wanted a 9-5. I was in cosmetology school working to get licensed when I got pregnant w my son. I dropped out because I wasn't going to be able to finish. and now when I think about a career I'm looking at things w I guess... security in them. I need benefits and a retirement plan you know? and I don't know if I'd get that being in that industry. this is jumbled I'm sorry but I'M IN A PICKLE! so I just wanna know from you ladies that are in it how is it going for you? do you have security? do you plan on doing what you do for the rest of your life or is it 'just for now'??

I'm not a mom, but I'm a hair stylist and makeup artist. If your working in a salon usually you don't get benefits or a retirement plan. Usually no paid vacations or paid sick days either. I worked at a chain salon for a few years and they offered benefits and paid vacations, ect. But its also hard to advance up the ladder in chain salons. Hope this helped!

I would definitely rec working at Sephora...great benefits, decent pay if you are fulltime and you will get to do what you live doing. I currently work there but I do not have children but I know a lot of my coworkers do. I hope that helps! You can also look into Mac.

Yeah sephora would be an option because I know you can move up also, but Mac I don't know if I see myself working at a counter like that. I don't know where that would take me?

@Shannon be. to work at a counter in Nordstrom for say estee lauder or Dior wouldn't you need a long resume of makeup artistry? maybe starting at a sephora or such type store would be a starting point for me to get there?

Consider this:
- Anytime you work in a creative field/industry - you will have challenges finding/getting benefits or retirement plans. {that mostly happens in the 9-5 job arena}
- Any time you work at a Retail Counter, you are working RETAIL, something that is driven by SALES/customer service and merely supported by the artistry & creativity. Unless you are a Special Event MUA that comes in seasonally.

Cody F. You have decide what kind of makeup artist you want to be. Find your joy in the disciplines you choose AND get paid/compensated equivalent to your personal commitment. {I am a single mom 17years now, with an elderly mother - and , I am a freelance makeup artist over 25 years. None of it is easy.] When an issue is important enough - we ALL find a way...even if it takes a little longer than we hoped. and ESPECIALLY if it takes few NON-makeup jobs to pay bills
side note: file your taxes, fill out financial aid paper work, get Pell grant, if you aren't married file for Single Parent grant -- go back and finish the your state's license requirement. Stop selling yourself short.

Thanks for the advice! I've thought long and hard about it and being in the makeup industry or I guess beauty industry is something I've wanted to do since I was a little girl and I've always said I Didn't want a 9-5, but now with a young son I felt that was the safest thing to do. I'm still young so I figure I still have some time so I'm going to get my experience in and apply to beauty stores all the while going to school so just in case at least I'll have something to fall back on (worst case scenario) I'd want my son to chase his dream regardless of what it is or how hard it would be to get it so I need to set an example

I'm thinking about going back to cosmetology school to get licensed because its only going to help. but I definitely do not want to do hair!! its interesting, it would be super cool to know how to style and cut hair but no definitely wanna stay away from being a hairstylist. just not for me. and I know most of cosmetology school is focused on just hair with a bit of makeup and esthetics in it.

Yeah it definitely helps going back to cosmo school. I used to work for Estee Lauder. I only had 2 years of retail in Sally's beauty supply store before working in Estee Lauder but what helped me get the job was my esthetician license. Most of the people who work on the beauty counter don't have an extensive makeup resume but they do have strong customer service skills and retail. If you are really good in sales and outgoing it sure helps but if you have your cosmo license you will get paid more than those who don't.
