1.) I started by "lightening" my hair, not BLEACHING. There is a difference! First I used OTC products to make my hair "ash blonde" and after about 3 applications (not one after the other, I had "conditioning" days in between) I achieved a medium ash blonde. I used Preference because they have a line of new blonde products without ammonia, without bleach, and they're super-conditioning.
***I will post a series of photos showing what my hair looked like before, after the 3 applications, bleaching at the salon, at home bleaching, then toner***
2.) Bleaching at the salon: This wasn't as expensive as I was expecting, my hair was getting that ugly "orangey" look to it, I went with getting it bleached and then a conditioning treatment and the stylist was surprised to say that I didn't lose any hair in the process. None at all! My secret? A $5.97 Walmart investment by good 'ol L'Oreal Paris called "Total Repair 5: Damage Erasing Balm." Use this stuff every other day on almost dry hair with a warm towel over my head for an hour. Does the trick nicely!
3.) At-home bleaching: As a super-picky blonde at this point I was skeptical about anything over the counter, but Feria has introduced a new line of "Absolute Platinum" colors, so I just picked up the lightest they had. It comes with a purple conditioner to tone down any yellow or orange tones, but it's not as powerful as the stuff you get from a beauty supply store (more on that later) My hair was the lightest yellow it could possibly be. I LOVED IT. But I still wanted the whiteish/gray hair my tiny heart desired so...
4.) Bought Manic Panic's "Virgin Snow" on Amazon.com Used it as directed and VOILA! My hair was the white-white I had so desperately been seeking. It was still supple, gorgeous, shiny, and I only required ONE very minute trim during the process, but I decided to go with a cut and style. Otherwise it would have been just the teeniest amount of trimming on my ends.
UPKEEP: I use the "Absolute Platinum" products to do my roots and if I can't find it I use "born blonde" on my roots. I use the Manic Panic any time I see any yellow tones coming back, and I use Clairol Shimmer lights shampoo (didn't have to get the conditioner for it to work!) every other day to maintain the color. If your hair is really porous, as most bleached hairs are, don't leave it on too long or you'll end up with PURPLE hair. It doesn't look bad, I'll even post a picture of that, but if you don't want that then I'm giving you the warning now! haha.
I hope this helps! If you have any more questions about it, feel free to e-mail me at "thehomeschoolwinner@gmail.com." Also, please don't send hate mail. I'm merely a stay-at-home mom of 1 who finally decided to do something for herself by getting her hair done, and though this site seems like a nice group of beauty enthusiasts, there's always someone lurking around just to pounce on some n00b like me.
Thank you so much and don't mind the pictures, they're all I have lol

I want white hair very bad! I have been talking to my friends about it a lot. I am worried about how it would treat my hair. Its very thick and long. I don't want to kill it anymore than I have to!

How can I do this with dark brown hair dyed black?

@Sarah J. With really, REALLY dark hair, I recommend starting off with the OTC "born blonde" because it can lift several shades at once. If you can put in the money get it done professionally, but it will run at least $80. If you have long hair, get 2 kits of it because there is NOTHING worse than patches of hair that didn't get covered evenly. You will have a stage of orange-y hair color, so I suggest you buy some shimmer lights shampoo online first so you can at least offset that color as much as possible. You'll have to rock it for at least a week (while conditioning at lot in between and washing as little as possible, even if you condition that day) and then try it again. Once your hair hits the color mine became after the 3 lightening processes, you can finally use the Feria "absolute platinum" which contains no ammonia as well. It's definitely a process but as long as you do it evenly you can totally play it off as something intentional. HOWEVER, don't color your ROOTS first. The heat from your head will activate the color faster and you'll end up with much lighter roots than the rest of your hair and it's a clear sign that you colored your hair at home (not like there's anything wrong with that, it's just best to not be noticeable!) I've seen some DISASTERS that way. Also, expect to have to get some hair trimmed after all of those colorings.

@Laura N. Your hair looks pretty blonde already! I don't think you'll need much more to get it white! The Manic Panic is just a TONER so it doesn't damage the hair. In fact, it conditions it pretty well! It's a lovely result.

I'm glad that I could help everyone out! I'm serious though, if you have any problems with your coloring process, just e-mail me. I have plenty of friends who are stylists and I've done everything they say is correct!
