that's what your dentist wants you to think. I'm gonna be honest braces hurt a lot. when i first got braces i couldn't eat anything solid for a week because it hurt too much and my lips were swollen for 3 days but after all that they don't hurt all that often.

It's a little sore but I wouldn't say they hurt. Take some ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) half hour before they start. Continue till bedtime and maybe the next day. The motin isn't for pain so much as to prevent/reduce any inflammation from the process.
You can limber up your gums by flossing a lot between now and then and increasing the number of strands twisted together that can pass through your teeth. This will help tone the muscles of the gums. You can also clean your finger really well and massage the front and back if your gums in little circles. Use mouthwash.

FYI- they have changed braces a LOT over the years so something that hurt years ago may have changed. Also some dentists have a softer touch than others. Work out a system to pause if you're not comfortable.

There are also different types of braces and different problems. Using bands on crowded teeth may be more sore than cemented piece on a tooth surface. Regrettably some dentists do not always adjust their method to be comfortable for various problems. If they don't ask to see someone else if that's possible. No sense dropping that kind of cash on a dentist whose skills are so limited.

I have braces at the moment and they're not that bad. When you first get them on, they will hurt for a week at most. Then after that, every time you get them done, they'll only get sore.

When I got my braces put on they put spacers on as well. I was afraid that I might have been in pain. But pain wasn't the word. Uncomfortable was the word. Especially when I ate. I probably lost so much wait for the first week if braces. Then a few months later I got power chAins placed in on the top. I was in so much pain the day after. So my best advice is drink cold cold drinks.
