I really want to dye my hair a dark red, but is there any way to do this without bleach?

Nope. There is no way you lift black color with out bleaching it to get it out. Black is the hardest color to remove from the hair. As is red. Color can not lift existing color. You have to bleach it, bleach is a color eater. Then you have to tone it with your desired red. I always tell my clients that black is a commitment. I never recommend it at all. Because people usually get sick of it and then want it removed. And then the color correction starts.. Its time and money.

it is naturally black, I've had it dip dyed before with bleach but that was a nightmare when the colour faded so was wondering if there was an alternative

No alternative. Trust me on this. Even if your hair is natural black you still have to LIFT it. Basic blond color can only lift it so much resulting in an orangey color. If you want it lighter- you most definitely have to bleach it. I am a colorist and have been so for 25 yrs- i know what im talking about. Ask any professional- theyll tell you the same thing..

Thanks Jessica, doesn't look like I'll be dying it then! Will just grow it and dip dye it again :)

it's natural, never dyed all of it just the ends which grew out ages ago. Will have a look, would probably test the ends before doing anything drastic anyway. Thanks!
