Well it depends if your cool or warm undertones. Are your veins more blue? If so then your cool. If they are more green, then your warm. With cool tones choose a red lipstick with blue undertones, if your warm choose some with yellow.

Veins are in my opinion a bad way to see your undertone. Go into even, but indirect daylight (you don't want to create harsh shadows or force your camera to compensate the color by standing in full on sunlight) and take a mug shot of yourself without makeup. I definitely have a cool bluish/pinkish look and I seriously did not figure that out until I did that.

I always do swatches of three different colors I like on my wrist. If you're cool tone go for something with more blue hues.(like berry reds)
Remember if you want to pull off classic red lips make sure to tone DOWN your eyes/blush ect. you only want to excentuate one feature in a given design.

Veins are a terrible way to find out. My body has different undertones than my face. I find I can only find lipstick that looks great if I try it on. I look better with blue based reds and I have yellow undertones.

I agree, blue based reds are a good way to go. Plus if you should go the other direction be careful the more orangey/warmer colors, *can* have a tendency to make your teeth look more yellow. Blue toned reds will make them look whiter.
