Do I really need an updo?

I have recently purchased a dress for my valentines date with a bateau neckline, and am wondering about the hairstyle. Browsing the web I have found an updo to be the best best, but I have a lot of difficulty doing one as I have such thick hair. Any opinions would help, thanks :)
