I have plans with a few people that I know to do their makeup and get some photographs put together for a portfolio. I'm open to tips and suggestions!

bb called it a trade off. meaning you look for other freelance people starting out eg photograph and models and work with them and every ones payment is the photo.

Thank you all for your tips and suggestions! I've started my page on Facebook! :) I'm also looking into getting some business cards printed and putting them all over - the hair salon I go to, my boyfriend has a friend whose sister owns a bridal shop, etc. :)

I am in the same place. I'm starting to build up my portfolio more and my mother told me to keep track of every makeup look even if I just put it on myself its just to build your portfolio and then when you actually start to get recognized for your work you could replace older photos with the new photos. its also good to have business cards and your portfolio with you at all times. If you want to make this a creer I would start out with an internship or at your local theatre practice as a apprentice

Network, network and network some more! In particular, try to link up with aspiring photographers and models that also need to build a portfolio (everyone gets a picture, everyone is happy). Further, reach out to modeling agencies in needs of MUAs for test shoots.

Definitely find photographers and models who want to build their portfolio also. When it comes to business cards, there are dos and donts. Get cards that have good quality, have a signature look, like mine is pink and gray, put your email, website, number (you can always use google voice for a business number), don't put a photo of you, put a photo of your work or just a simple color. Hope this helps.
