Here is how I found out I was going blind. Scary right? Nearly two years of seeing doctors, specialists and waiting rooms I got an answer. Then I kept it a secret. Since I've come out about it, I have EKANS' (Pokemon Go Fiends know what that means) insinuating that I'm lying about being blind. This video is a storytime to share my journey of finally getting an answer about my sight struggles. Stargardt's Disease is something I didn't take seriously at first but it's real. It's scary, it's annoying, it challenging and it's sensitive topic to have to defend. To all the people past and future who have or will accuse me of not being legally blind, this video is for understanding. In order for this world to make room for people like me who don't 'look' blind but are partially sighted, you need to understand what we live. My blindness doesn't mean I can't buy makeup for giveaways or try to pursue my dreams of being self sufficient through Youtube. Six years of struggles later, it's my mission to bring advocacy and awareness to young blindness.

THE FACTS ▹
🔳 Nearsighted between 1996-1999
🔳 Got glasses to correct that
🔳 Eyes were acting up in 2009
🔳 Saw 7 specialists in 5 offices & hospitals
🔳 Diagnosed in 2011
🔳 Prism glases only helped 2011-2012
🔳 Was let go from a job in 2013 because of mistakes cuased by sight
🔳 Stress caused me to drastically vision soon after
🔳 Kept it a secret at 7 jobs
🔳 One of my bff's started a GoFundMe in 2015 for my support group/life savings
🔳 Currently 20/200 R & 20/400 L

THE STATS
🔳 Affects youth 7-21 (my doctors have seen patients as young as 2 and old as 40 though)
🔳 Autosomal Recessive - Gene mistake on both parents chormosome
🔳 Vitamin A is not properly removed and it wears away at the Macular (small part of the retina)
🔳 Leads to legal blindness or worse
🔳 Effects are: inability to read, focus on detail, depth of field, night blindness, can't recognize faces, colour differentiation becomes difficult
🔳 No cure, no preventative treatment, no surgery or therapy
