Hi beauties, there is this one cat who lives outside my house and I have been giving it food and shelter outside about a month and really want to rescue it and give it a permanent home inside my home! But I'm scared as it was a stray cat and I am a patient at the moment with very low immune system so I can't take any chances with germs/diseases. I am willing to take it to the vet for treatment nonetheless.. I never did this before so any tips on the situation? Such as what to do and/or what to ask for at the vet? I have a portable cat house which I can get the cat to go inside but I'm afraid at the vet she/he will run out and away? I clearly just need all the tips and help please!

I have never done this myself, though I have thought of doing so a few times before. My boyfriend and his roommates have 7 cats in their house and often rescue strays to find foster homes until they can find the cat a forever home. The girl he lives with normally does all of the cat related work. She recently found one in the middle of a highway and took it home to grab a little cat carrier then took it to the vet for a checkup, shots, and spaying/neutering. They usually ask to be tested for feline hiv and cancer as well as getting the cat all necessary shots. I think once you get the kitty to the vet, it should be fine. I'm sure the vet deals with cat rescues quite often and will have advice for you if you explain the situation. I think as long as you have the little cat carrier to get her into the vet's office, it should be fine, but you can always call ahead for any advice they may be able to give you for transporting the cat.

I will ask my boyfriend and his room mates for more information on how they deal with the rescue kitties this weekend if you haven't taken the cat to the vet yet.

Good luck! =)

I completely agree with Natalie. We rescued a stray a few months ago and immediately took her to the vets. Once we explained the situation, the vet gave her vaccines, checked for fleas and war mites, gave a worming treatment and ran some tests.
If you have a weak immune system I suggest you wear long sleeves etc just to protect yourself from any scratches until age gets the all clear.
Once the vet checks her and treats her (you should tell your vet about your immune system) the kitty should not pose a threat.
Only thing to be careful around is the cat litter as that can carry disease.
Hope it works out for you, you should get a friend to help, it's a lovely thing you are considering and so rewarding! Good luck x
