I've decided to give myself layers. For the past few years I've wanted to get layers in my hair. I only get it done maybe once a year or longer (bad I know but whatever haha) nd literally every time I tell the person doing my hair "I want really choppy layers that you can see" and they are always like "Oh totally that sounds neato speedo!!" And every time after it's done, what do I have? Hair that's one length. When I confront them about it they ALWAYS say they "blended them". I tell them I didn't want that, I wanted to them to be visible: "If I cut them any more it'll look like a mullet." UGH SO FRUSTRATING. So I've decided if I want this job done RIGHT, I gotta do it myself.
Do y'all have any tips for doing this? I have the special hair scissors and I don't really care about "ruining my hair by doing it myself" if that's a concern for any of you hahaha I'm just SOOOOO tired of having one length hair. Help please!! Thank you! :)

Hey, I'm a hairdresser...and I'll tell you when most people attempt to do layers on themselves it's un-fixable. Go to a decent salon and ask your stylist for a 180 degree layered cut, with the shortest layer starting at your eye, or cheek, or jaw, whatever your preference. Also, tell them to blunt cut the layers, no point cutting. If they don't understand these directions, which are taught during beauty school...RUN. :-)

Well haha I am definitely no hairdresser but I have been cutting my own hair for the last few years. Just go for it! :) I mean if its what you really want and you've been trying and trying for a while then whatever. I'm sure it'll look fine! Haha I feel I'm in the completely opposite predicament. I have cute way too many choppy layers and its taken my two years to grow them out to a more reasonable length. I don't really have advice for you haha but what I do is just take pieces and cut in a downward angle to make it choppy yet still a little blended if you get what I mean. Just have fun with it. :) I'm sure it'll look fine! Cutting layers is pretty easy smeasy. :)

I don't want to use a razor though since it causes breakage easier. I cut a little of my hair, I flipped my head over and just cut straight across. They turned out okay, definitely WAAAAAY better than it was before hahaha

I know I just separate my hair in layers and just sort of snip small sections in semi random lengths. Turns out great. Lol
