I'd wear that on an everyday occasion. I feel like prom is something you go all out on. There have to be a dress for you 😊 there's lots with cutouts and slits! Try a formfitting dress like that. I wasn't really looking forward to dress shopping either. I hate ball gown dresses on me and straight ones are usually too simple. I decided on a mermaid dress.

If you wear that to prom, it may look sorta casual. However, make sure to accessorize! And do your makeup and hair! In that way, the whole outfit with before a little bit more formal.

If you do go that route, you have to make sure that the fabrics are formal enough. You couldn't just buy a jersey maxi skirt and crop top, you would have to buy them in substantial, formal fabrics in order for it to work. I totally believe that the exact outfit Taylor Swift is wearing, is definitely black tie appropriate BUT if the fabric or the fit of the garments were less than perfect, it could look like a very casual outfit.
You said you're not a prom dress type of person, so definitely go for something more "you" and unique! All the dresses other people posted are way too boring and NOT at all fashion forward. Go with a more unique and fashionable piece that you'll be comfortable (and happy) wearing! If you wore this outfit to prom, you would be WAY more sophisticated, elegant, and well dressed than anyone wearing one of those gaudy and unfashionable typical prom dresses.

You cannot have fun in something you don't feel comfortable in..and I don't mean just physically. This is a stylish way to express personality and is beautiful. For the crop to work, that belly button needs to remain out of sight the entire evening. Keep that in mind when trying on your skirts. Quality fabrics, accessories, make up and hair are what is going to elevate this to epic status.
