Here is what I use and I have really dark acne scars as well here is a photo of my before n after makeup so here goes:
For days I don't want to wear too much makeup:
I start with tarte bb cream then set it with kat Von D pressed powder foundation, then I layer on a full coverage concealer (sometimes I start with Clinique acne concealer for redness reduction then use MUFE hd concealer or kat Von d lock it concealer) then I set it all again with tarte smooth operator to smooth out everything from there I fill in my brows, mascara, blush on the cheeks n a nice lip color - now for days I want to use foundation I start with hourglass primer, then use a full coverage foundation - my favorites are Estée Lauder double wear and MUFE mat velvet - and follow up with the kat Von d powder and everything after that (concealer, etc) so that's my routine to cover up my acne scars :) and all the products I use are great for sensitive acne-prone skin

Amber, I think it's most important to take good care of your skin to have that base where you can look flawless once makeup is applied. That starts with a good cleansing routine (never ever ever ever sleep in makeup). Another thing is to be sure you have a foundation that matches your skin as close to perfectly as you can find it. I say this because this is part of what allows you to 'build up' your foundation without it looking all crazy. Lastly, and in my opinion most importantly, is the application. I personally have the most success using a damp but well squeezed out beauty blender. I sometimes get redness on my nose that can be hard to cover and I normally will apply my foundation, let it settle and dry up a bit (4-5 mins) then go in again with my beauty blender and apply another thin layer where I need more coverage. I think many people don't go through that step of letting their first application 'dry' first before trying to add more to certain spots they are trying to conceal and it ends up getting caked up or just looking plain ole thick and crazy.

Definitely give your liquids time to dry before you apply powder to set it - my method sounds like a lot of products but if you use a light hand (literally I use my fingers to apply my foundation n concealer n use my body temp to blend it all out) and when done properly my look never looks or feels cakey but the reason I do double powder is to control oil n make sure my look lasts all day so I don't have to touch up.
