I remember asking a question in here about whether or not I should go to a MAU to get my prom makeup done. One of the users commented about how some people and even youtubers think that they're MAU because they can apply eyeshadow and know a few tricks. One mentioned that a true MAU can recreate any look.
Soooo...what do you think makes someone a good MAU? Would you consider yourself to be an MAU?

Just because you know a few tricks here and there and some videos on YouTube, that doesn't really make you a makeup artist, much like having an DSLR camera doesn't make you a photographer. To me, knowing if a MUA is legit or not is seeing if they have a portfolio, showing me the work they've done. I'd also like to know what kind of jobs they've done, like doing makeup at a fashion show of some sort or doing stage makeup. I really wouldn't want to go to someone without knowing how good their work is and what other people think of them. Extensive knowledge of a variety of products is also a plus, and if they know how to apply makeup to different kinds of faces, I.e. someone with hooded eyes.

Pretty much what Bailey said but I also want to add someone who listens to their client. sometimes I feel like MUAs have the same problem as hair stylists which is "I know best so I'm going to ignore what you asked for and do what I want because I KNOW it will look better." even if that's true I feel like the clients needs should come first regardless of the MUAs opinion. I'm not saying the shouldn't input their professional opinion and perhaps try to change their mind but don't just do your own thing without discussing it first.

To me, a true makeup artist consists of the following;

A person with a passion for not only cosmetics, but for helping others achieve what they may not be able to do on their own. A person with a love for art and beauty. Someone who has the drive to continue learning even if they have endless amounts of knowledge. They also need to be someone who isn't afraid to give others information and encouragement. They do need to have skill,but a love for it and a drive to learn more about it is very very important because with out that, they can't get the skill they desire. I think a makeup artist needs to be intelligent and somewhat gentle to a degree because they do deal with people. They need to be able to listen and do as asked but they also need to know what is best for the client...

Not the best wording but I think I got my idea through.

I know two lovely ladies that fit my description very well, and inspire me every day. Lots of live goes out to you ladies; Alma, and Jackie!!:)))<3<3<3

Like most of these guys answers, it's the portfolio that defined the artist status.

You would only hire an artist that can understand and achieve your expectation.

Experiences is necessary because it acknowledged that the artist can be reliable & prepared for any kind of work.

I'm an certified make up artist but I don't call myself a make up artist because it's not the path I am after.

I think a good makeup artist is someone that has a vision, but be able to change it and work around it for their client. They need passion and to put 110% into every job. They should know how to work with all skintypes, and all colors. Of course, portfolios and proper kits are recommended as well for being the most professional you can be.
