I hate in-your-face lipstick because I like to emphasise my eyes, what sort of colours work for that sort if thing?

I would go with something similar to your natural lip color. Not necessarily nude, but the same tone. I have fairly dark pink lips, naturally, so if I want a more natural makeup look, I'll keep the same darkness/lightness as my lips, but pick a color with just a hint of a different color. It's kind of hard for me to explain, sorry =(
