How to get from black to Brown.I'm bleaching hair tomorrow it will obviously go orange I was wondering if I put dark blonde over would it go light brown??
Mar 16, 2014
Ame S.
Yes, dark blonde colour will make black hair go light brown, I have done that several times.
Mar 16, 2014
Kimberley R.
Did you bleach it first ame?
Mar 16, 2014
Ame S.
No bleaching for me doll, I just let the dark blonde sit on my hair for half an hour longer than the development time.
Mar 16, 2014
Kimberley R.
What colour was your hair after bleaching??
Mar 16, 2014
Ame S.
It was a light chestnut with blonde sheen in the sun.

How long did you leave bleach on to get tha col? sorry for all questions lol as usually after 45/60 min it goes orange on mine.

Ame S.
No apology needed at all. So I used L'Or?al Professional Majirel hair colour but did mine at home. I used a 20 developer and left it on for a good 80 to 100 minutes. My roomie who is studying to become a hairdersser now told me that I shouldn't have used L'Or?al Majirel cuz it has Ammonia.

The main cause of brassiness during colouring is not keeping the hair dye on for enough time duration. And I suggest you use a developer thats low concentration cuz the higher the concentration, the quicker it will lift colour from your hair strands and increase chances of oranges.
Mar 16, 2014
Ame S.
So halving the development time and using a higher concentration developer is most likely to cause all the more oranges to develop.

Going to do strande test first to see how long it takes :-)
Mar 16, 2014
Ame S.
And do use an ammonia free colouring kit plus an organic shampoo and conditioner for after colour care.
Mar 16, 2014
Ame S.
Yep! the strand test is the most important.

Is your hair dyed black? Because if its dyed then you can't go lighter with normal color, no matter how high your H2o2 volume is and how long you leave it on.
Yellow/orange color comes from the natural pigments in your hair. You have two types Eumelanin (these are big and dark) and Pheomelanin (are small yellow/red) The big dark pigments are easy to remove from your hair the smaller ones are not, they take lots of time to breakdown and the darker your hair the more likely you have lots of Pheomelanin.
But like I said if your hair is dyed dark it cannot be lightened without bleaching (unless its only been a few days since the color and then there is a special treatment that can lift out only the unnatural pigments, but it can only be done by a professional)

If you're bleaching your hair and dying it brown immediately I'd go for a medium or light brown instead of a dark/ash blonde because your hair is going to fade very quickly, if you still have orange undertones in the blonde then within a week it's going to a a brassy orange colour rather than a nice caramel brown colour!

Ok it's dyed black its had two dyes on last tym was 4 wks ago. shaye am a light ash brown?or golden Brown?

Yes, exactly what Michaela said. color will not lift color. in my 13 years as a stylist I have never seen blond hair color turn black to a brown. its just not possible. once you bleach your hair, then you can determine what shade of brown to use. you don't need to bleach your hair to blonde either. just slightly lighter then the brown you want. if after you bleach, and your hair is brassy, then go with a more neutral or slightly ashy brown. sometimes box hair dyes can really pull orange, or super ash sso you want to becareful with that. but I always recommended going to see a professional when doing big color changes like this :-)

These girls know their stuff!! Color doesn't lift color. This change can even be tough for a stylist. Box dyes are very unpredictable when removing.

I just went thru the same thing. You are most likely going to have to do at least 2 bleachings. try and do the 2nd bleach another day if you can tolerate it. it will lessen the damage. the problem with bleaching dark hair is you have to let it get past the brassiness stage. most people tend to panic and wash it out before those colors are gone. I'm irish so I have a lot of red undertones and I used wella toner in ash blonde and it helped a tiny bit but it still had a lot of orange so I bleached it for the 2nd time then used a semipermanent color in one shade lighter then I wanted and it worked perfectly. the semipermanent color didnt require me to use a developer at all. Have you ever considered trying the hicolor hilights dyes for dark hair only? It lightens and deposits the color all at once. I recommend using a hair dye remover prior to using it but they arent too pricey at sallys.

Try a colour stripper? Like Loreal's Color remover? It got rid of all my pitch black colour to a nice kinda chestnut brown. So it's not hopeless to remove.

Color will not lift color so if the dark was from previous color then bleach is a must. 30 developer will lift 3 levels or so I wouldnt use 40 unless you want orange. use 30 and keep an eye on it.

I also use a violet bleach like kaleidascopes from sallys.
