You cut the end off an old sock and start rolling the one end (doesn't matter which end) you keep rolling until you reach the other end (: it's as simple as that (:

1. Cut off the end of a sock.
2. Roll it up so it looks like a donut.
3. Put it around your ponytail.
4. Take your ponytail and make two halves, a top and bottom half.
5. Take the end of the top piece and roll it around the top part of your sock.
6. While holding the top piece in place take the end of the bottom piece and roll it around the bottom part of your sock.
7. Roll it down the rest of your ponytail keeping the ends securely inside.
It does takes practice and some coordination for steps 5-7. Also, it doesn't really work too well if you have layers in your hair.

There are many methods of creating a sock bun; some easier than others. My favorite one, which creates the classic doughnut shape, is the following.
1) After creating the sock base put your hair into a high ponytail atop your head. (The location is really all up to you)
2) (I recommend this for people with thin hair, or freshly washed hair) Tease sections of the ponytail and then finish teasing it as a whole to bind all of the hairs together, so to speak.
3) Put the sock around your ponytail and bring it to the tip.
4) Start rolling it the same way you did to create the sock itself.
5) Adjust as needed.
There are a bunch more methods , and even types of sock buns, but this is the one that works best for me, I hope it helped. :)
