For an affordable gel, I really like the ELF one. Essence makes a good one too. In my opinion, gel with an angled brush is the easiest for sure. Prestige makes good liquid liners and they're available at the drugstore, but I do find them harder to control than gel. My favorite liquid liner is the NYX Super Fat and Super Skinny ( feel free to check out my review of them http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/nyx-super-fat-super-skinny-eye-markers/ ) they are just a lot easier to use than traditional liquid liners. When I do use liquid liner, I tend to use my own brush with it.

Wet n Wild liquid liner. I had best success with this even as a beginner. I tried felt tip but failed everytime with it.
