My foundation looks so bad :(

I've been using maybellines dream matte mousse light porcelain for a while and think that it looks best on my skin but I recently bought l'oreal's true match liquid foundation in rose ivory and after moisturising with Nivea in the morning after a wash and then applying the liquid foundation then powder, I find it looks very dry and cakey especially around my nose ! I also bought maybellines dream smooth primer but haven't used it yet, has anyone any tips on how to make it not look so awful ? My skin looks better with the matte mousse but I do like using my new l'oreal !
