I just started using one as well and as far as sponge application goes, it's the best. I've been partial to using domed/pointed brushes for putting on foundation these days, using this http://www.sephora.com/pro-precision-foundation-brush-58-P313011?skuId=1419399.

don't be fooled by the girly color and fun shape, it's just another sponge. I prefer MAC's 187 to apply foundation. It's good for stippling and blending and creates a flawless finish!

I agree that it sucks up too much product. If you find yourself buying foundation and concealer more frequently, that's why.
