It won't turn out super curly because your hair just isn't naturally tightly curled or curled at all.

It looks nice with the wavyness, though. Like beachy waves.

No matter how much you scrunch it it is never going to get it very wavy because you as you said have pin strait hair naturally. However, coming from a girl with naturally wavy hair there are a couple of things you can do to improve your wave when you scrunch.
First add your mousse to wet hair and scrunch it in. Then use a towel (preferably microfibre) or a t-shirt to "plop" your hair for the amount of time you would usually towel dry it. When you towel dry your hair like this it concertinas the hairs as it drys and because you've already put the mouse in it it will help to hold the wave put in by plopping. when you take your hair down add more mousse if needed and diffuse as you did before.
Plopping is a technique used to enhance the natural curls patten and works very well on wavy and curly hair. I don't know how well it will work on straight hair but it worth giving it a try.
Just found a tutorial of someone with straight hair plopping which might be quite usedfull : http://absewlutelychrissycouture.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/hair-plopping.html
