My little sister has gone through mild phases where she breaks out and has a couple zits here and there but she has full on acne. She uses the roc night cream and I think she is on the higher dosage now. She also started using proactive when she started breaking out. Here is my theory and I was wondering what you guys think about this. I think maybe she started breaking out because she was still getting use to the roc treatment and decided to get some proactive. However, I think it is making her problem worse because her proactive cleanser seems to have granules in it so I think that it is basically an exfoliant. I was reading about roc cream and it said that it wasn't a good idea to exfoliate when using the cream. So would that cause acne?

Proactiv has been known to make some people's acne worse - it worked ok for me as a teenager but not so much as an adult - so it's not for everyone n every skin type - also starting any new acne regiment will cause some breakouts at first until your skin gets used to it - how long has she been using the proactiv?

She could try witch hazel.

It may be that she's allergic to one of the ingredients. There are types of dermatitis that can cause bumps that look like acne. My suggestion is that she stops the proactive, use a bare bones regime that avoids the use products like alcohol and sodium laurel sulfate, and use spot treatments only for the acne. Using a faced wash that has sylic acid, plus a spot treatment, and a toner with alcohol, is overkill for most people, over dries the face, and can make it so sensitive from dry skin it results in dermatitis.

Cetaphil works great for acne prone skin and a toner and also aveeno has a moisturizer to help prevent breakouts.

Roc has retinol in it and shouldn't be used with proactive at all and you have to exfoliate when using retinol its causes rapid cell turnover however it's a uneven exfoliation, your skin cells turnover at different times on different parts of your face so the dead skin still needs to be removed and proactive is to strong to use with it it will just cause inflammation and breakouts and there is no dosage for roc it's over the counter unless your meaning retin A which is prescription

You guys are awesome! Thanks. She has been using the proactive for a couple months but yeah it must be overkill :( she is also using a clinique compact powder and I don't think it is giving her pores time to breath.

My daughter has had years of cystic acne. It's so awful to go through, I feel for your sister. We have spent loads of money on high-end skincare. Most things would work for a while but then it would flare up again. Some of them were so harsh that they gave her horribly dry and sore skin and they even caused bleach marks on her pillowcase! These were ones from the doctor.
Here's what worked eventually:
Dermawand - Google it, the claims sound wild but they all seem to be accurate. It sterilises the skin and brings fresh blood & oxygen to it. She uses it for a couple of minutes twice daily.
Use a pure oil to cleanse - Google oil cleansing. It really helps by being pure and soothing and giving the skin the oil it needs, so it doesn't need to create more oil. Oil dissolves oil so it is the best thing for cleansing.
Make up a toner using rosewater, whitchazel (not too much, it is quite strong), a little apple cider vinegar, and a few drops of an essential oil such as geranium or lavender.
Use an oil-free moisturizer and add a few drops of tea tree oil to the bottle/jar.
Be sure to cleanse any makeup tools every single day. There are brush cleansing products that you can just spray on and wipe off daily and then give a thorough wash once a week. There's no point saying don't use makeup as it covers the enemy - but try to get some time outside each day before putting makeup on.
Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. Buy a few and change them every two days.
Keep hair off the face.
Get some sunlight daily.
Drink enough water.
Eat a wide variety of foods to ensure good nutrition.
These are the combination of things that worked for her! All cheaper than the expensive products we were paying for.
