You tan more in the water because of it reflecting the sun. I haven't heard if any way to avoid getting tanned. Burned, yes. Tanned, no

It is very important to wear Sunscreen all the time, but especially important to wear a high quality Waterproof sure screen when swimming outdoors. You have to apply 20-30 mins before going outdoors and reapply after every hour or whatever is recommended on that specific product. The higher the SPF the more protection you have from the damaging rays of the sun.

I was in competitive swimming for 3 years and water polo for a year, a year later I still have tan lines 😝 make sure to constantly apply sunscreen, there is now a sunscreen(I can't remember the name) that you can put on while wet. On breaks spray more on! I have heard that there is something called a reverse tan spray that lightens skin. You could try that :)
