I use pencil on the tightline and waterline (putting black eyeliner on the tight line creates the illusion of fuller lashes).
liquid eyeliner on the lid. liquid is easiest for thin lines.
sometimes I will draw a thin line under my lower lash line with pencil and blend it out with a pencil brush or blending brush to create a smokey effect.

People usually say gel but I think you'd need to be used to gel to be able to get a thin line. I'd go for liquid for thin lines, pencil for waterline or pencil for a smudged upper lashline. You could also get an angled eyeliner brush and just use a black eyeshadow if you don't want a harsh clear line. You could also intensify any eyeliner by patting black eyeshadow on top. Its really all about practice though and I think no matter what you use you'll master quickly if you're patient and practice. :)

Gel deffo! Pencil always fades & scratches if it hasn't been sharpened correctly! Gel is easy to use I use it on my water lines :)
