Grandparents are staying out here for 2 whole months(yaya!!) and after I've sucked every information regarding beauty from their old times, right after I explained I made my dramatic switch to sulfate free shampoos, it surprised me when they've recommended to wash my hair with rainwater. Rainwater? Repeat that please! After much research(thanks google!!) who knew the water we wash our beautiful heads in aren't even clean? Chock full of rust from pipes and added minerals from filteration (if it even underwent that process) isn't letting our manes be the silk and lightweight as it's true potential could be. I've made it my mission to catch some rainwater and substitute that to see the difference.

It's very hard to catch rainwater, even when it's thunderstorm season in Florida and it rained everyday for the past week, I've only managed to collect about 1 cup that will be used to rinse my hair after shampooing and conditioning with the water from the shower.
I will post the major or not-so-major difference it made.

Another thing. You can not store rainwater for more than a few days. 1-2 days, I've managed to stretch to 3 but you simply cannot keep it around for a while. The water will turn bad and mossy since it comes from our friends the clouds and therefore it can't be stored like how you would with rainwater.

Few tips to collecting rainwater;
Try to dig a bowl like place in the ground, lay out a clean plastic bag and when the rain falls, it will fall into the middle for you to harvest OR just lay out a big cup like me.. Lol.

One more thing--stay with me now; do not collect rainwater if you live in any area where there is a factory or acid rain or smog. Anything like that is harmful and I recommend you do not put any of that water on your head. You should know better!

I admire your effort, and understand what your saying but it's not going to make a huge difference. I would just go buy a filter for your shower head. I mean I live in Canada where the water is heavily filtered already and we've had the water tested at our house, and it's very clean and filtered. I used to live outside of the city in the middle of nowhere where we had well water as our source of water. It was fine to drink and stuff it just had added minerals. It definitely made my hair color fade faster and my blonde turn brassy faster but overall there was not much of a difference in my hairs health from showering in that water then to now in filtered water.
My mom dated a guy for a long time who only used rainwater for everything. He had bins that collected them, his whole backyard was like a series of tunnels leading to his house for his showers and sinks. The only difference I noticed after showering at his place was that I didn't smell like my yummy smelly body wash, I smelt (I'm having a hard time finding words to describe it) very natural, kinda like moss lol. But again, there wasn't much of a difference other than the smell. I didn't feel cleaner or have softer hair or anything. I probably showered there 10 times over the course of the year they dated but we spent a week there, and I showered everyday before school. I hope you see a difference and it's worth all the effort of collecting enough rain water though haha.

Haha! You betcha! I did read about filters but I just figured it wasn't quite the same. I will try however, though I don't expect polished hardwood shine and literally silklike strands but I do think it will make somewhat of a difference. It's all about test and trail but I can understand where you're coming from. Back in New York, it's not exactly clean and I'm only here for vacation so I thought wow. Of course I won't be throwing pans and pots in the sky whenever it rains lol. I'm not THAT crazy but your mom's friend seemed to be dedicated. Thanks for sharing. :) much appreciated.

I don't have that problem because here in Alaska in Fairbanks the water is very clean it is as clean as buying bottled water. Yes in some states in some cities the water is very very bad ( from my city you go 30 min up North to North Pole , their water is yellow!, yuck!) but I get your point so if I ever move to a city with gross water I have an alternative! Thank you.

My mom only washes her hair with our Enagic filterer..."Kangen water". Back home we have super rusty water. Kinda sucks!

My husband and I designed our irrigation system to collect rain water in barrels. But to cleanse with it...I'm just not a fan. We tried that one day for fun...washed our hair...didnt like the smell of it. I love using my shower head filter. Awesome that you're trying it out. Keep us updated.

I washed, rinsed and shampooed and conditioned, not in that precise order but with the little effort of water I got, it did somewhat make my hair feel light but only a little since I collected so "much". Though not much of a difference, I will try to get a bigger batch and hopefully when it turns out to be enough water, I'll try again. Def something I recommend you to try though! It feels so natural on my scalp which is where most of the water went on. A lil disappointed I didn't have more to begin with. :/ but, next time! :3.

Wouldn't the rain water have air pollutants like petrol/diesel fumes, pollen, dust and so forth that is in the atmosphere before it lands?
